Introducing Domaine Simon Colin

20th January 2023

Burgundy , New listing

We are delighted to introduce a new grower to our Burgundy range, Simon Colin. Simon took over 9.3ha of his father, Philippe Colin’s vineyards from the 2021 vintage. Prior to the 2021 vintage, Simon made his first vintage under the Simon Colin label in 2017 by sourcing fruit from Chassagne, Puligny, and Rully and producing a range of regional wines, village wines, and carefully crafted premier crus. At a young age, he has already gained extensive experience as a vigneron, having trained with his uncle Bruno and serving as the assistant winemaker at Domaine Etienne Sauzet during the 2020 harvest. He has also spent time at his father’s estate in South Africa and Oregon.

Simon has immediately converted his vineyards to organic viticulture and is considering biodynamic methods. Simon is clearly an extremely talented winemaker, the wines have fantastic precision, delicacy and energy.

Bourgogne Chardonnay, there are 2 parcels of vines, 25 and 35 years old, both situated in the commune of Chassagne-Monrachet totalling 0.9 hectares. The wine is entirely vinified in oak pieces (20% new), with no batonnage, for 12 months and bottled without filtration.

Chassagne Montrachet Blanc is from 8 individual parcels of vines, totalling 1.20 hectares, ranging from 5 to 70 years old. Vinified in a combination of pieces and 350 litre barrels (25% new).

Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru Les Chaumées is high on the northern side of the commune with very calcaire soils and hardly any clay topsoil. It comprises 3 parcels, totalling 1.5 hectares, of 20-60 year old vines and in 2021 includes Clos Saint-Abdon – which is usually bottled separately. Vinified entirely in pieces (25% new).

Chevalier-Montrachet Rouge is from 5 parcels, totalling 0.9 hectares, of 35-50 year of vines – four trained to cordon de royat and one to guyot simple. 25% whole bunches, 25% new oak.
