LE SOULA
Côtes Catalanes
Le Soula is located in the Fenouilledes, high up in the foothills of the Eastern Pyrenees.
The top of the Agly Valley benefits from a cooler climate and can produce wines of real quality. They have the potential equal the very finest French wines.
Today Le Soula is in the hands of Mark Walford and Wendy Wilson, with Wendy running the estate and winemaking. The vineyard has been organic since the outset in 2001, working biodynamically since 2008, with certification following in 2011.
The soil is decomposed granite, with gneiss, quartz and feldspar, and a hectare of slate. The climate is hard and extreme, combining the heat of the Southern sun with the cold and rain of the mountains and the Tramontane and Marin winds.
The vineyard of 17 hectares, surrounded by 50 or so hectares of Maquis, is principally comprised of old vines. The red grapes are Carignan, Syrah and Grenache Noir. The whites are blended from a cocktail of Macabeu, Vermentino, Sauvignon, Grenache Blanc, Grenache Gris, Marsanne, Roussanne and Tourbat. At up to 660 metres above sea level these vineyards are some of the very highest in France.
The wines are renowned for their purity, vitality and ability to age. They are to be found on some of the finest tables of Paris, London, New York and further afield.
