DOMAINE POUDEROUX
MAURY
Robert Pouderoux’s cousin Louise Tanguy and her partner Leo Hemmer Bury, who met whist studying agronomy in Toulouse now run this small family owned Estate. Louise’s first vintage was in 2022. The Estate has been organic since 2011 and Biodynamic since 2021.Maury is an an AOP for fortified vin doux naturel wines made in the Roussillon wine growing region in the foothills of the Pyrenees. It is created by adding local spirit to the red wine mid fermentation leaving the wine with natural residual sugars ( the same process used in making Port wine ).
Muscat de Rivesaltes is a delicious dessert wine, not as rich as Sauternes and tasting of peaches and fresh grapes. The Maurys are intensely flavoured, sweet red wines made from pure Grenache. Maury is fresh and fruity with good red berry flavours.
Grande Réserve is fuller and richer with hints of spice and dark red fruit. At the top of the range, Hors d’Age is lighter in colour and has a wonderful mellow, smooth elegance, very similar to a good Tawny Port. As with a good port, Maury becomes more refined with age and takes on greater complexity. All three styles work exceptionally well with chocolate, caramelised oranges and blue cheese. Or if your palate prefers savoury flavours, try them slightly chilled with good charcuterie or coarse cut paté, a match made in heaven.
